Seems a bit weird but we have both red flag warnings and freeze warnings at the same time right now. I had some extra time today, so I ripped out all the beds except one which has the newest crop of peas, beans and cucumbers. Everything else is in the greenhouse.

Dehydrating brassica leaves. I absolutely love these. They are great for munching on as chips or grinding up into powder. Because they are dehydrated at low temps most of the nutritional value is still present. I mix the powders into drinks, smoothies, stews, or any type of meal that has a sauce. It’s also a fantastic way to use or preserve a part of the plant most people just throw away.

Happy Monday. Saving seeds for next year. Lavender, sage, echinacea and bergamot.

Before the freeze, I harvested a lot of veggies. With them, I made some quiches which are one of my most favorite foods. Flavors include zucchini and cheese, swiss chard and tomato, and bacon, mushroom and pepper. I also made some infusion with the rest of the marigolds in both alcohol and oil, because being the scientist I have to compare and contrast everything. These infusions are for sure a rabbit hole I can fall down and the reason I planted the front tea garden (aka the square).

Well, the first freeze definitely occurred last night with temps dropping down to 23F. Even with most things covered with frost protection, the hard freeze killed most everything in the garden covered or not. So glad I moved so many plants to the greenhouse yesterday! The one thing that did okay was the marigolds. I cut a few and gave them to our neighbor.

We have a freeze warning for the next few days. I moved 22 tomatoes, 10 peppers, 2 eggplants, a flat of basil and a flat of nasturtiums off the deck and into the greenhouse for shoulder season growing. Everything else is growing great right now with lots of green and yellow zucchini’s, beans, cucumbers and tomatoes on the vine. Hoping it doesn’t actually freeze so I can have a few more weeks of growing left.

Not especially loving the patterning on this new watercolor paper. (I say new, but it’s more like I’ve newly rediscovered it from the paper stash.) I am loving the fact that the aurora was big and beautiful last night.

End of season tomato goodness. I sat with the bees today and pruned back A LOT of tomato plants while listening to Audibles. Love me a good murder mystery. Still a hundred or more tomatoes on the vines.

I went to a class about orchards this evening. It was fairly insightful.

Lighthouses are about hope and so is this cucumber. It’s been such a weird year with the late season freezes and then 100+ degrees almost immediately afterwards. This is the first cucumber and they are finally, finally coming on.

It’s not quite the birds and the bees today, more like the bunnies and the bees.
